Frequently Asked Questions

For incoming students, you must be admitted to take classes at New Mexico Tech for your application to be considered. Once you get here, you must remain a full-time student (12 credit hours for undergraduate students; graduate students may be eligible to live in University Housing with less credits). Students eligible for family housing, must be enrolled in at least 9 credit hours if they are undergraduate students and 6 credit hours if they are graduate students. If you drop below our credit hour requirements at anytime, you must notify Residential Life immediately. Most undergraduate students are required to carry a campus meal plan in order to reside in University Housing. For more information on housing requirements, please refer to our Room & Board Application and License Agreement (Housing & Meals application).

When you are accepted to study at New Mexico Tech, fill out the room and board application.

When fall reservations for university housing become full, late applicants may be placed on a waiting list for housing, in which case they would be notified directly. Please contact us for more information.

A deposit of $200 is required to hold your room; Family Housing residents pay an additional $50 per family member. Deposits can be paid with a credit card or check.

Please review our cancellation policy. Cancellations must be in writing (e-mails are acceptable). If you wish to cancel, you can send an email to us at residential_life@nmt.edu.

Returning students will choose thier room during the Room Selction Process.  All fall housing assignments will be sent to incoming students to their New Mexico Tech email addresses (@student.nmt.edu) around the 1st week of June.

Check in days vary depending on whether you are a new or returning student. For new students it usually is the Friday before classes begin for the semster.  For current students it is the Saturday before classes begin.  Please refer to your assignment confirmation email for the exact date and time of  your check in day and instructions. When you arrive on your scheduled check-in day, you will first check in with the Office of Housing and Residential Life located in Fidel Suite 253, to have your ID card encoded. Once your card is encoded, please go to your assigned hall where you will see signs for check in. If you have any questions or need an after-hours check-in please email our office in advance. No early arrivals will be allowed without prior written approval from our office.

This information will be e-mailed with your housing assignment. This may change if your roommate cancels or switches assignments.

There are many reasons why you didn’t receive your requested roommate. Some include late date of either application, no space was left in your requested hall, or your requested roommate did not request you. If you would like to discuss your individual situation, please contact  our office at residential_life@nmt.edu or call Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm at 575-835-5900.

Contact your RA to request roommate mediation. RAs are trained in conflict mediation, and we generally find that an unbiased third party can help students come up with solutions that they may not have discovered on their own. In more challenging situations, a series of mediations may be necessary. We encourage you to communicate with your RA if you feel that further intervention is needed.

At Tech, there are no reserved parking spaces, and it does not cost to park on campus. Parking is readily available in our many parking lots across campus. If you live on campus, you are required to register your vehicle. This assures that if we need to contact you to move your vehicle, we can get a hold of you.

Each residential student can access the Internet via the University’s wireless and/or wired options. For assistance getting connected please contact Tech’s Information Services Department.

Phones are not provided in student rooms. If you would like phone services (local calls, long distance, voicemail, etc.) please contact Tech’s Information Services Department.

We do have some designated single rooms in the Residence Halls.  These are generally filled by students with approved accomodations from our Student Access Services Office. Having a double room (super single) to yourself is only available if occupancy numbers permit it. Super single room assignments will occur, as space permits, after the 2nd week of classes at the beginning of each semester.

Speak with your RA first. Your RA should be aware of your desire to change rooms and in the case or a roommate conflict he or she can help facilitate a roommate agreement. RAs will let you know if a room switch may be possible and if so how to proceed.

All you need to do is email Residential Life at residential_life@nmt.edu. Please include your name, room, and a detailed description of the issue. We will send you a confirmation of your request.
In the event of an emergency (i.e. flooding), please call the Residential Life Office at 575-835-5900.

If it is outside of normal business hours (M-F 8am-5 pm) please contact Campus Police at 575-835-5434. We will get someone out to assist. In the unlikely event, you request seems to take a long time to be addressed, contact the Residential Life Office and we will help address the concern.

The Residence Halls close at noon on the Saturday after finals week. For more specific date information, please contact us.

All Traditional Residence Halls Close during semester breaks. These include Baca, Driscoll, Presidents, South, Torres and West.

All Tech residence halls and University apartments have Resident Assistants (RAs) who are upper-class students. RAs at Tech play many different roles: peer counselors, resource people, educators, and programmers. RAs spend a significant amount of time getting to know students on an individual basis as well as working to bring residents together to create a positive floor and hall community. 

Attending university can be both an exciting and challenging time. Fortunately, you will be able to depend on your RA for support. Your RA has not only experienced the day-to-day problems and anxieties that you may encounter as a student, but has been specially trained to help you handle them. RAs are there to help you adapt to your living and academic environment. They will guide you through the many issues that confront today’s college student, such as academic difficulties, social life, and personal problems.

RAs also lead various activities that allow you an opportunity to meet and interact with other students at Tech. You will have many opportunities to take part in a variety of activities that will help you grow socially, academically and culturally. The RAs are committed to helping you achieve the best college experience by keeping you connected to all the opportunities Tech and the surrounding community have to offer.
