About MechE Mayhem
MechE Mayhem is a robotics education program and competition developed by students and faculty in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Established in 2020, it reaches over 6,000 students and teachers across New Mexico each year. The program provides hands-on learning materials, workshops, and mentorship opportunities designed to inspire interest in engineering and STEM.
Each spring, New Mexico Tech hosts the MechE Mayhem robot combat tournament, where nearly 100 teams and 400 competitors test their creations in high-energy matches. Students learn circuit design, programming, mechanical engineering, and problem-solving through practical application.
MESA Combat Robot
The MESA Combat Bots program introduces middle and high school students to robotics, programming, and electronics through guided design projects. Participants learn to build and code robots using Arduino systems and basic wiring techniques, typically working with foam or 3D-printed materials for safety.
MESA students are encouraged to bring their robots to NMT’s annual spring robot combat tournament to test their creations in friendly competition. The program promotes creativity, teamwork, and applied engineering skills.
150g Combat Robot
The 150g Robot Combat program challenges more advanced students to take their designs further.
Participants learn soldering, mechanical design, and systems integration while developing robots that must meet strict size and weight constraints.
This program emphasizes engineering tradeoffs and iterative problem-solving—the same principles used in real-world design. Students then compete in the Miner Mayhem competition at NMT, where they face off in a variety of robot classes, from 150-gram mini-bots to 3-pound heavyweights.
