Invented at NMT – Nicotine Patch

The nicotine patch was invented at New Mexico Tech in 1979 by psychology professor Dr. Frank Etscorn. His innovation, patented in 1986, has helped millions of people overcome nicotine addiction and was recognized by Time and Fortune magazines.

The idea was sparked by accident when Dr. Etscorn spilled liquid nicotine on his arm while conducting research and realized the substance could be absorbed through the skin. The patch delivers controlled doses of nicotine through the skin, reducing withdrawal symptoms and supporting smoking cessation. Dr. Etscorn’s work remains one of the most influential health-related inventions of the late 20th century.
