Powerful Research – Explosive Tests

Ranked #2 in the nation among Mechanical Engineering master’s programs by Best Value Schools (2025), New Mexico Tech provides graduate students with hands-on research opportunities, including explosives testing through EMRTC.

This test was performed as part of a graduate-level explosives engineering course taught by Dr. Seokbin Lim. In the experiment, a flat copper arrow was sandwiched between layers of explosive material and detonated inside a steel pipe. After detonation, the embedded arrow and fragmentation pattern were studied to analyze how metals deform under extreme pressure. These experiments help students understand detonation physics, material behavior, and real-world engineering applications.
