Study Abroad & Financial Aid

There are at least three ways to take part in Study Abroad or International Exchange Programs:

The Consortium Agreement for Financial Aid and Scholarship

Note: Your funding must be arranged by New Mexico Tech, the degree-granting (or ‘home’) institution.

In order to use financial aid and/or scholarships to pay for expenses while you are abroad at the host school, you will need to complete a Consortium Agreement for Financial Aid and Scholarship. Available at the Financial Aid Office, this document gathers basic information from you (the student), anticipated transferable credit hours from your Academic Advisor, and the estimated cost of attendance (tuition and fees, and living expenses) from the host institution. This information is then used by the Financial Aid Office to adjust your cost of attendance (budget) for financial aid purposes to try to fund the estimated tuition, fees, and living expenses at the host school.

Scholarships

Legislative Lottery Scholarship

If you are receiving the Legislative Lottery Scholarship and you are using another New Mexico school’s study abroad program, such as through UNM or NMSU, you will be charged tuition by that school. The Financial Aid Office will adjust your Legislative Lottery Scholarship to cover the amount of tuition you are being charged by that school

New Mexico Tech Scholarship

If you are receiving a New Mexico Tech Scholarship such as the Copper, Presidential, Transfer Excel, etc., you can choose to receive the funds to help with expenses at the host school OR you can put the scholarship ‘on hold’ until you complete your study abroad. If you put the scholarship on hold, the semester(s) of eligibility will be added to the original length of your scholarship offer. Getting the money…when? As with any regular semester that you are enrolled at New Mexico Tech, your financial aid and/or scholarship funds will be credited to your Tech student account. Since you will not actually owe money to Tech, you will receive the scholarship or financial aid money in the form of a refund. However, the disbursement process can take as long as three weeks, so be prepared to initially pay your host school with your own resources. Please note: this information is meant to provide basic information about how financial aid and/or scholarships can be used to help finance your study abroad.
