New Mexico Tech Privacy Reminder
For New Mexico Tech Staff and Faculty
It is NMT’s media relations protocol that any NMT employee who receives a media inquiry should immediately direct the inquiring party to contact the Office of Marketing and Communications (ext. 5539) to get the media member the best and most accurate information, set up interviews, and provide any other services requested.
For Media Outlets, Campus Visitors, and Members of the University Community
New Mexico Tech has an interest in ensuring that the privacy of all of its students, faculty and staff is respected, and that no activities interfere with education, research or residential life.
The university is a state of New Mexico Research Institution. Most common areas of the campus typically are open to visitors. Even in these locations, media representatives must not interfere with the privacy of students, faculty and staff, or with educational, research and residential activities. The university may revoke at any time permission to be present in these and any other areas of the university.
In accordance with the university’s policies, members of the media are prohibited from entering student residences or dining halls. Members of the media are prohibited in all residential areas of the university, including student residences and the surrounding faculty neighborhoods without prior permission from the university's Marketing and Communications Office. Media are prohibited inside classrooms, libraries, laboratories and other academic buildings without prior permission from the Marketing and Communications Office and instructors.
No commercial activity may occur on the campus without the university's permission. This includes the taking of photos, or similar audio or visual recordings that are sold to others, or otherwise used for commercial, promotional or marketing purposes. Those involved in unauthorized commercial activity will be asked to leave campus immediately. Requests for permission should be submitted to Interim Marketing and Communications Director Katie Bauer at 575-835-5620 or 575-322-0927.
Any filming or photography on campus must adhere to the university’s policies.
Recognized student groups and official units of the university will be granted such permission so long as they do not violate the privacy or property interests of others; so long as any sale of their products is predominantly on campus to students, faculty and staff; and so long as they comply with applicable university policies and procedures.
Violators of this policy may be subject to criminal and/or civil liability, as well as university disciplinary action if applicable.

- Professional or commercial photographers and filmmakers
- Campus visitors taking pictures or filming for commercial purposes or using a commercial or professional photographer or filmmaker

Notwithstanding the foregoing, the university reserves the right to prohibit any filming or photography on its lands for any reason, including if the filming or photography creates the potential for: 1) disruption of academic, research, business or student activities; 2) damage to or alteration of university property; 3) inappropriate use of the New Mexico Tech name, marks or image; 4) disruption of traffic, parking or pedestrian pathways; 5) other safety hazards; or 6) violations of the university’s privacy policies.
News-related filming and photography
The Marketing and Communications Office accommodates reasonable requests for journalistic, news-related, non-commercial shooting, but reserves the right to deny permission when the request runs contrary to university policies – especially those that ensure student privacy. The subject of all news-related filming or photography must be directly related to the university.
Non-news filming or photography
Commercial filming and photography related to the marketing of companies and organizations other than New Mexico Tech is prohibited on university property. Such activities are incompatible with the university’s long-standing policies prohibiting endorsement or the appearance of endorsement.
The Marketing and Communications Office will consider film and photography requests involving programs featuring New Mexico Tech students, faculty or staff, or the creation of television shows, movies, documentaries, or educational-related programs, providing the subject matter is related to New Mexico Tech.
Non-New Mexico Tech entities are prohibited from flying drones and other unmanned flying vehicles above or from within New Mexico Tech lands.
