Design Teams
Design teams are an integral part of the mechanical engineering program at New Mexico Tech. Students work with faculty advisors and industrial sponsors to research, design, and develop innovative solutions to difficult real-world problems.

Summary:
The In-Orbit Structural Health Monitoring (IOSHM) team is conducting research to develop a payload that will perform a series of structural health monitoring experiments aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The experiments of interest, which will take place in a low-earth orbit environment (LEO), are an impedance test analyzing structural integrity via vibration, a guided wave test analyzing different types of damage, and an impedance assessment of a free sensor reflecting influence of space environment on a piezoelectric material. The guided wave experiment consists of a piezoelectric actuator located centrally on a plate and four receiving piezoelectric sensors at the corners; the actuator will release a pulse, and the receiving sensors will analyze the frequency response of the various impingements, and the data will be analyzed via frequency mapping. The second experiment is an electromechanical impedance test: a centrally located piezoelectric actuator will propagate a wave through the plate, and the data will be analyzed via impedance analysis.
