The Socorro Animal Shelter is the sole municipal, open-admission animal shelter in Socorro County, serving as the city's official animal welfare organization. Volunteering options at the shelter primarily involve helping with adoptions, finding permanent homes for animals, fostering, or assisting with animal rescue and relocation to partner organizations. Interested volunteers, including a special "Shelter Buddies" program for children, should fill out an application and review the shelter's policies before volunteering.

Fill out an application: Interested volunteers need to complete an application form, which outlines the shelter's policies. 

Follow shelter rules: Volunteers must accept and adhere to all policies and decisions of the shelter staff and maintain a good working relationship with paid staff. 

Accompanied by a parent/guardian: If under 18, a parent or guardian must accompany the minor volunteer at all times.

Opportunity Overview: 

Puerto Seguro Safe Harbor, Inc. (PSI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation chartered to offer a “safe place” for people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity in Socorro County. PSI does not charge for its services. Puerto Seguro Safe Harbor, Inc. (PSI) relies on volunteers to sustain its daily operations. Volunteers help with a variety of tasks, including processing donations, preparing food, serving food, visiting clients, organizing supplies, painting, completing yard work, and cleaning.

Opportunity Overview: 

Socorro County offers senior services including the Socorro City-County Senior Center providing meals, transportation, and recreation, along with programs like the Socorro County Senior Volunteer Program for community engagement and the Socorro Foster Grandparent Program for intergenerational support. Other services may include homemaker assistance, chore services, and various support programs to promote senior independence and well-being.   

Additional Information: 

The Senior Companion Program (SCP) allows volunteers to work with fellow seniors in an effort to assist them to maintain their independent living situation.  This program’s main focus is on those members of our communities who have developmental disabilities and special needs.  It is incredible what friendship with one's. Peers can do to foster independence and self-sufficiency.

Opportunity Overview: 

A Socorro schools volunteer supports students and staff by assisting in classrooms, libraries, or offices, tutoring or mentoring students, helping with after-school programs, and participating in community events. The goal is to enrich the educational environment, show students their community cares, and foster stronger partnerships between schools and the community.   

Additional Information: 

Volunteer Requirements 

1. Age: Be at least 18 years old. 
2. Application: Complete the official volunteer application. 
3. Background Check: Complete an FBI background check. 
4. Training: Complete a 3-hour vector training. 
5. Policies: Acknowledge the Drug-Free Policy and the Technology Acceptable Use Policy.
6. Placement: Meet with the site Principal or Department Director for an approved placement and schedule before starting.

Opportunity Overview: 

The official volunteer organization is Socorro Search and Rescue (SSAR), which operates under the authority of the New Mexico State Police. The group consists largely of students from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMT) and provides primary Search and Rescue (SAR) services to Socorro, Catron, and Sierra Counties.
