Academic Advising Resources
What is academic advising at NMT?
Academic Advising is a collaboration between advisors and students; the advisor provides information and resources for the student's academic, professional, and social development.
NMT's strength is that students are advised by faculty in their major. The relationship that develops between the faculty advisor and student can be academically and professionally beneficial.
Advisor Responsibilities
- Uphold the integrity and value of the degree by maintaining University standards and policies.
- Listen carefully and respect the student’s questions, concerns, and problems.
- Collaborate with the student to develop academic and personal goals.
- Communicate core, major, and minor degree requirements.
- Provide appropriate referrals and resources.
- Say “no” when that’s the appropriate answer.
Student Responsibilities
- Know degree requirements, relevant school policies, and deadlines.
- Be open to developing and clarifying academic and professional goals.
- Research university programs and courses.
- Regularly consult faculty advisor and degree audit systems.
- Use campus academic, social, and professional resources.
- Be respectful: be on time and prepared for scheduled meetings. Generally, advisors expect students (especially experienced students) to take a 1st pass at building a schedule.
- Select which sections to take. For example, the advisor will help students determine if they below in Physics 1 or Physics 2, but the student will select which section of lab lecture and recitation to take based on their preferred schedule.
New Student Advising Process & Resources
- A placement form will be generating by the Registar’s office and sent to the student’s NMT email and the advisor.
- The placement form is based on ACT/SAT score or the free NMT math placement test.
- Math Placement Process https://nmt.edu/academics/math/ugrad/mathplacement.php
- Email mathplacement@nmt.edu to request access to the test. Include your name and NMT Banner Student ID number. Take the test as soon as possible. This will leave you with the option to enroll in a summer math course in case you don't pass the test.
- Summer math classes are an excellent way to advance your placement and are supported by the NMT Summer Math Scholarship. Information on this scholarship can be found on the Financial Aid Freshman scholarship page under other scholarships. Summer Math classes are typically offered both face to face and online to accommodate students from rural areas taking math prep classes at NMT.
- Summer math classes can also be taken at other institution and transferred to NMT. The summer math scholarship only supports classes taken at NMT.
- Using this placement information, the student and advisor will build a course plan using the current course catalogue. The classes required for a mechanical engineering degree are described in the 4 year graduation plan on the Mech Eng Student Resource page.
- Students can graduate under any course catalogue from the semester they start at NMT till they graduate as long as they are continuously enrolled (ie. every fall and spring semester).
- Current semester course offering are always listed on banweb under class schedule. To pull the current semesters list of classes select a semester, the dept. that teaches the class (ie. Physics for PHYS 1310 Physics 1 or Engineering Science for ES 302 Mechanics of Materials). The site also includes a PDF listing of general education classes that meet requirements as humanities, social sciences, or fine arts courses which will be offered and what dept. is offering them.
- Once the student and advisor have agreed on a list of classes to be taken (for example Calc 1, Chem 1, Intro to Mechanical Engineering, and a Humanities or Social Science Elective) it will be up to the student to select which elective and which section(ie time and date) of lecture and or lab to take from the class schedule and the advisor will provide the student with an Advising Pin (APIN) for that semester which is confirmation they planned the schedule with an advisor.
- Finally, students can use the APIN to register for classes following these Instructions.
Transfer Advising Process & Resources
- Transfer credits will be evaluated by the registrar and a transfer evaluation sent to the student’s NMT email and advisor.
- Transfer credit requires a college transcript from the college where the class was taken to be sent to NMT. For dual credit high school classes, a high school transcript is not sufficient.
- Some classes will require a syllabus be sent to the NMT transfer credit evaluator at the registrar’s office.
- Common course number system across all NM public colleges https://ccns.hed.state.nm.us/
- NMT transfer student resources
