Fundraising event has helped hundreds of Techies finish their degrees

SOCORRO, N.M. – Hundreds of golfers will converge on Socorro next week to support the education mission of New Mexico Tech – and have a day full of fun.

The President’s Club Golf Tournament, hosted by Tech President Dr. Stephen G. Wells, is Thursday and Friday, Sept. 13 and 14, at the New Mexico Tech Golf Course.

Sponsorship opportunities are available from $3,000 to $10,000. More information is available at https://www.nmt.edu/advancement/golf-tournament.php. To register or for sponsorship information, contact tournament director Sandi Lucero at (575) 835-5618 or sandi.lucero@nmt.edu.

Over the years, the President’s Scholarship Fund has helped more than 400 students finish their degrees.

The tournament kicks off with a VIP flight on Thursday, Sept. 15. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. VIPs are treated to a private reception with President Wells in the evening. Friday’s features two flights, with shotgun starts at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. All golfers are treated to lunch at the golf pavilion and a dinner at Macey Center. The top finishers in each flight earn prizes, mostly donated by sponsors. Many other prizes will be given away by random drawing. Golfers are also treated to gourmet snacks and free drinks as they make their way around the golf course.

The difficulty of the university’s curriculum often contributes to student’s financial challenges. Most undergraduate students at the state-sponsored science and engineering school take at least five years to complete a bachelor’s degree.

Since most government scholarship programs, such as the Lottery Scholarship, only fund four years of university study, the President’s Scholarship Fund typically helps fifth-year students complete their degree work.

The event requires an army of volunteers from nearly every department on campus. Often times, students who benefit from the President’s Fund Scholarships are on hand to help the tournament run smoothly. Top finishes in each flight get prizes, but the true winners are the students.
