Topic: Addressing the Vulnerabilities of Deteriorated Civil Structures through Experimental and Numerical Studies

Speaker: Dr. Seyedsina Yousefianmoghadam

Postdoctoral Researcher, Department of Civil, Structural, and Environmental Engineering, University at Buffalo

ABSTRACT
This presentation discusses the findings of experimental studies on damaged/deteriorated civil
structures and infrastructure. This includes dynamic tests of two buildings at several damage states as well as vibration-based and quasi-static tests on a highway bridge and its retrofitted components.
The overarching goal of the studies is to investigate and address the vulnerabilities of existing
structures to events such as earthquakes and aging. Common causes of these vulnerabilities include but are not limited to the non-ductile behavior of concrete structures designed according to older codes, outdated construction methods, and complex interaction between structural and nonstructural elements. Condition assessment, health monitoring, and retrofitting of structures are among the main stages of addressing such vulnerabilities. The presentation topics will include examples of tasks accomplished in each of these stages.

BIO
Dr. Yousefianmoghdam is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Civil, Structural, and
Environmental Engineering at the University at Buffalo, where he received his Ph.D. in 2019. His
research interests include assessment and improvement of the performance of existing reinforced concrete (RC) and masonry structures subjected to earthquakes, as well as decay due to aging. His doctoral research focused on the experimental and numerical seismic assessment and health monitoring of existing structures, highlighted by dynamic tests of two actual RC buildings. Dr. Yousefianmoghadam has also been involved in reconnaissance efforts following the recent earthquakes in Nepal, Ecuador, and Mexico. Currently, he is investigating the effectiveness of retrofit methods for deteriorated pre-stressed concrete box-beam bridges through experimental and computational studies.
