Seminar 04/22- Dr. David Lattanzi

April 22, 2021   1:50pm

Topic: Digital Twin Analytics: A Foundation for Smart Infrastructure & Communities

Speaker: Dr. David Lattanzi
Associate Professor & John Toups Faculty Fellow; George Mason University

ABSTRACT
How do we create truly autonomous infrastructure systems? Answering this grand challenge will lead the way towards transformative changes in our cities and local communities with respect to sustainability, resilience, and public health. In this talk, I will present a pathway to creating autonomous infrastructure through a living information model of a structure, a “digital twin”. The emphasis will be on the creation of digital twin-driven analytics that leverage artificial intelligence and, ideally, connect to our physics-driven understanding of structural systems. Topics will include 3D point cloud analysis and finite element model updating, as well as ongoing work on time- history analysis of diagnostic information. I will conclude with a discussion of a new question that increasingly motivates my research: creating mechanisms for humans to communicate and engage with digital twin systems.

BIO
Dr. David Lattanzi, PE is an associate professor and the John Toups Faculty Fellow in Civil
Engineering at George Mason University. He is also the co-director of the Center for Advancing
Human-Machine Partnership. Dr. Lattanzi's research focus is at the intersection of civil
engineering and computer science as it pertains to the integration of artificial intelligence methods into structural monitoring and assessment. He studies how computer vision, robotics, and artificial intelligence can be adapted to create intelligent infrastructure systems and to improve infrastructure resilience and long-term management. His current research initiatives include information-driven digital twins for structures, unmanned aerial vehicles for infrastructure inspection, machine learning for predictive analytics, and 3D computer vision methods for structural assessments. He has received a variety of awards for his work on 3D computer vision methods in structural inspection. He received his PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington in 2013 and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Pennsylvania.
