Seminar 04/01- Dr. Negin Alemazkoor
04/01/2021
Topic: Fast, Online and Efficient Computational Tools for Smart and Resilient Infrastructure Systems
Speaker: Dr. Negin Alemazkoor
Assistant Professor, Department of Engineering Systems and Environment, University of Virginia
ABSTRACT
Optimal management of critical infrastructure systems directly affects welfare of
the society.
Achieving optimal management requires fast, reliable and efficient analysis of the
system.
However, such analysis is extremely challenging due to the large size of infrastructure
systems
and various inherent sources of uncertainty. This talk focuses on how advances in
computing and sensing technologies can facilitate analysis and management of large
infrastructure systems. In particular, I present some of the computational tools that
I have recently developed that a) accelerate computations for probabilistic system
analysis and uncertainty quantification; b) accurately capture the changes in demand
trend and/or system topology in an on-line fashion and update the prediction models
accordingly; and c) efficiently collect system data to alleviate the cost of data
storage and communication. I also present some applications of these computational
tools in critical infrastructure systems, such as transportation and power systems,
and discuss the computational cost savings and accuracy improvements.

Negin Alemazkoor is an Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia in the Department
of
Engineering systems and Environment. She received her PhD in Civil Engineering with
a minor
in Statistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She holds a B.S.
in Civil
Engineering from Sharif University of Technology and a M.S. in Transportation Engineering
from
Texas A&M University. Dr. Alemazkoor’s current research mainly focuses on developing
computational tools for analysis of smart and resilient infrastructure systems with
an emphasis on power and transportation systems. Dr. Alemazkoor has been invited to
attend the Rising Stars in Computational and Data Science workshop hosted by University
of Texas at Austin and Sandia National Laboratory in 2019 and selected as one of the
20 female graduate students and postdocs invited to MIT’s 2017 CEE Rising Stars workshop.
Dr. Alemazkoor has also been recognized for her teaching excellence for four semesters
at the University of Illinois.
