NMT Graduate Student Receives Award for Best Student Paper of the Year

dec 13, 2021

During the 2021 ASME Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures, and Intelligent Systems (SMASIS), NMT graduate student, Alfred Mongare, and Dr. Donghyeon Ryu, were awarded the 2021 Best Student Paper Award (3rd place).

The award was presented by the Aerospace Division Adaptive Structures and Materials Systems Branch for the paper which was titled “Delamination Detection in Fiber-Reinforced Polymers Using Mechano-Luminescence-Optoelectronic Strain Sensor.” The paper discusses the possible use of multifunctional mechano-luminescence-optoelectronic (MLO) sensors to detect delamination in fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites.

This possibility may provide the aerospace industry with a self-powered strain sensor for structural health monitoring of FRP components used in many aerospace structures. For more information about the conference, or to gain access to the paper, you can visit the ASME page for the paper.
