On April 13, 2019, the Experimental Sounding Rocket Team of New Mexico Tech and White Sands Research and Developers (WSRDs) had conducted its launch of the Mustang 6Bx rocket at Spaceport America. Before the launch, the students implemented a five point pitot array system into the nose cone of the rocket to experimentally collect data on the orientation, velocity and pressure during flight. The Rocket had conducted a successful launch and even reached an altitude of 23,000 feet from the pad. After launch, Dr. Jaramillo of WSRDS had this to say;
“NMT’s 2015 operation was impressive and professional, but every year they have improved. Today, NMT students demonstrate the highest levels of professionalism and operational prowess. What is all the more impressive is that they pull it off at zero dark thirty.”
The team consists of students from the junior/senior design clinic of the Mechanical Engineering department at New Mexico Tech along with Dr. Michael Hargather as the Faculty advisor for the team. This is the fourth year that New Mexico Tech has worked with WSRDs on a rocket launch and are continuing on conducting more launches in the future with the newly designed Mustang 7 rocket set to take flight in spring of 2020 next year.
