8-G: Oceanic Crust Hydrothermal-circulation Offshore Guerrero
The 8-G project is an NSF-funded experiment that includes a research cruise offshore southern Mexico.
The objectives are to collect seafloor heat flux data and high-resolution 2D multichannel seismic reflection data along transects crossing seamounts, plate bending faults, and the toe of the margin wedge. The overarching goal is to determine the effects hydrothermal circulation on the thermal state of the Cocos plate near the deformation front in an area with flat slab subduction.
Our research cruise aboard the R/V Langseth will be in spring/summer 2025.
