New Mexico Tech has announced it has started the process of selecting an official masoct for the university, sending the following message to its students, staff, faculty, and alumni:

"New Mexico State University students, staff, faculty, and alumni are all Aggies.
Highlands University’s folks call themselves Cowboys
Members of the Western New Mexico community are the Mustangs
Eastern New Mexico is the home of the Greyhounds
At the University of New Mexico, everyone’s a Lobo
And at New Mexico Tech, we’re the home of the . . .

That’s where you come in.

President Wells and the NMT Administration have approved a new initiative that will provide New Mexico Tech with an official mascot. The New Mexico Tech community--our students, faculty, staff, and alumni--will all be able to submit their ideas for the new mascot. Then we will vote for the new official name from a list of finalists. We hope all members of the NMT community participate in this process, and here’s how:

From September 4 through October 4, the Communication and Marketing office will accept suggestions for the new mascot name. This is an open period where alumni, staff, and students can submit their ideas for the new mascot. We’re looking for creativity, but also want to ensure the new mascot best represents New Mexico Tech across a broad spectrum of audiences. Our mascot should be something all members of our community can call themselves with pride, and it will serve as the name for all of NMT’s official club sports teams.

The Communication and Marketing office will announce the method by which it will accept submissions on Tuesday morning next week, once Tech returns from its Labor Day vacation. The NMT community can submit its ideas at any time until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, October 4.

A committee comprised of representatives from NMT’s student body, alumni, faculty, and administration will then convene on Friday, October 5, to sift through the submissions and select 3-5 finalists. Those finalists will be presented to the NMT community on Monday, October 8. On that Monday, all the way through the end of the 49ers celebration on Monday, October 22, members of the NMT community can vote for their favorite of the finalists. After tallying the votes, the Communication and Marketing office will announce the winner and New Mexico Tech’s new official mascot on Wednesday, October 24."
