S&P Global Ratings Affirms New Mexico Tech’s A+ Credit Rating with Stable Outlook

Oct 14, 2026

S&P Global Ratings has affirmed its A+ underlying credit rating (SPUR) and stable outlook for New Mexico Tech’s (NMT) Series 2019 system revenue bonds. The affirmation highlights NMT’s strong operational foundations, prudent fiscal leadership, robust balance sheet, and continued state support.

The rating reflects NMT’s ongoing commitment to responsible long-term financial management. Financial resources across the university and the New Mexico Tech Foundation provide strong operational backing and coverage for ongoing academic programs and existing obligations. NMT’s low debt profile, with total outstanding debt at $17.3 million as of fiscal year-end 2025 and annual debt service representing just 1.4% of operating expenditures, ensures that resources remain focused on core institutional priorities. Additionally, NMT’s competitive success in securing federal research grants, which account for nearly half of total operating revenues, reaffirms its national standing as a premier STEM research institution.

NMT’s operational trajectory reflects sustained financial consistency and balanced performance while strong capital and operational support from the State of New Mexico has been instrumental in powering critical campus advancements. State funding and state general obligation bond proceeds have directly driven major facility upgrades, including modernizing IT infrastructure and expanding the Petroleum Recovery Research Center, allowing NMT to continually enhance its learning and research environments without incurring additional direct debt.

“S&P's affirmation of our A+ rating validates our proactive strategy to ensure institutional strength and academic excellence,” said Delilah Walsh, the university’s Vice President for Administration and Finance. “By maintaining a very low debt profile and managing our resources responsibly, New Mexico Tech remains well-positioned to deliver world-class STEM education and high-impact scientific research while maintaining institutional resilience.”

“Our strong financial health directly enhances our ability to invest in what matters most: Our students and our core STEM mission," said Dr. Michael Jackson, president of New Mexico Tech. “We remain deeply committed to providing an exceptional student experience, strengthening campus support services, and creating hands-on research opportunities that prepare our students to lead in science and engineering. Financial stability ensures we can continue offering a transformative STEM education while expanding student support across every department.”

S&P noted that NMT’s financial flexibility provides vital stability as the university navigates broader demographic shifts facing higher education nationally. Under the leadership of the Strategic Enrollment and Academic Affairs management team, NMT is actively expanding support programs, dual-enrollment opportunities, and regional recruitment initiatives to broaden educational access and sustain future growth.
