New Mexico Tech Begins Planning for a State-of-the-Art Student and Community Wellness Center
Oct. 6, 2025
New Mexico Tech is taking a major step toward promoting health, wellness, and community engagement with plans to build a Student and Community Wellness Center on campus.
The proposed facility will serve as a hub for fitness, recreation, education, and social connection for both students and the broader Socorro community.
Features that are being considered for the facility include:
- A fully equipped fitness area for cardiovascular training, strength conditioning, and flexibility
- An indoor, high-school competition-length swimming pool
- A rock climbing wall
- Dedicated spaces for yoga, meditation, and group exercise
- Sports courts, an indoor track, and a modern e-gaming arena
- Locker rooms and multipurpose event and meeting spaces
- Outdoor recreational equipment checkout
- Educational programs focused on well-being and healthy lifestyles
“This center is designed to provide students and community members with a sense of belonging,” said Ms. Amanda Saenz, Asst. Director of Recreation and Well-Being.“It is the place that provides support for all aspects of our health—physical, mental, emotional, and social. This center will create well-rounded students who prosper in STEM and their health while promoting healthy lifestyle options for members of the university and the Socorro community.”
NMT is currently seeking input from students, faculty, staff, and local community members to ensure the center reflects both the university's and the community's needs and interests. A brief 8-question survey is available for anyone who wishes to share their ideas.
