NMT Board Chair Statement

Sept. 17, 2025

Dr. Jackson
Dr. Michael Jackson

Greetings, New Mexico Tech Community,

In the wake of the recent resignation of our president, many of you understandably expressed concern about what would follow. The Board of Regents (Board) worked quickly to provide an answer and fill the presidential void by appointing Provost Michael Jackson to the position of Acting President of New Mexico Tech (Tech). The Board then immediately began the search for the right Interim President, the person who would take the helm pending the selection of a new permanent president.

A number of current Tech employees, a retired Tech employee, and a former university president at another university expressed their very high regard for Tech and interest in the interim position. The Board was gratified by those responses and thanked those individuals. I’m confident that all would have worked hard for Tech and sacrificed to do so.

At the previously scheduled meeting on September 15, 2025, the Board appointed Dr. Michael Jackson as the Interim President, effective immediately, until a permanent President is in place. As such, September 15 was a good day for the Board and for New Mexico Tech. Dr. Jackson is held in the highest regard by the Tech faculty and loved by our students. His commitment to the institution is reflected in how hard he works. He attends to every detail, leaving no stone unturned in advancing the cause of Tech and the many lives it touches. Everyone who interacts with him immediately knows that he is a leader of the highest character.

We ask that you do more than welcome and congratulate Interim President Jackson. We ask that you join the Board in fully supporting his efforts on behalf of our great university.

Sincerely,

-David A. Lepre, Regent Chair
