Dr. Susan Bilek chosen to lead earthquake science group
Dr. Susan Bilek, professor in the Earth and Environmental Sciences department at New Mexico Tech, has been selected to serve as the president-elect of the Seismological Society of America.
“It’s an honor to be selected to serve the Seismological Society of America,” said Bilek. “This organization’s mission is to advance seismology and related research, touching on earthquake hazards, as well as the science of explosion sources and other seismic events.”
Dr. Bilek (Ph.D., UC Santa Cruz, 2001) became a member of SSA as a graduate student and attended many of the annual scientific meetings. Her involvement with SSA has, she said, “provided wonderful networking opportunities…. I look forward to serving the group to promote the mission, especially in the areas of training the next generation of seismologists and earthquake engineers.”
Arriving at NMT in 2003 as an assistant professor, Dr. Bilek is now a full professor and teaches courses from General Geophysics to Earthquake and Volcano Hazards to Computational Science for Geophysicists. She has received millions in research funding, and has often been cited by her colleagues. Dr. Bilek has advised dozens of graduate students and is active in key organizations and journals in her field.
About the Seismological Society of America
The Seismological Society of America (SSA) was born in the aftershocks of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. From these earliest days, SSA has been committed to advancing seismology and sharing research with the public to help build an earthquake-aware world. The expertise of SSA scientists and engineers informs plans for emergency responses and greater safety around the world. For more information, visit seismosoc.org.
