New Mexico Tech professor honored as Geochemistry Fellow
Feb 16, 2024

SOCORRO, NM (Feb. 16, 2024)—Last week, Dr. Kent Condie, professor emeritus at New Mexico Tech, was given the distinction of Geochemistry Fellow from the leading geochemistry professional organization, the Geochemical Society. This honorary title is bestowed upon outstanding scientists who have, over some years, made a major contribution to the field of geochemistry.
Kent Condie is a world authority on the Precambrian Earth, which he explores using the geochemistry of igneous and sedimentary rocks and the U-Pb ages and Hf isotopic compositions of zircon. He synthesizes geochemical and geological data and marries these with dynamic modeling to gain insights into Earth's evolving dynamic processes.
Dr. Condie was given the NM Bureau of Geology’s 2023 Achievement Award. https://www.nmt.edu/news/2023/kent-condie.php Also, Dr. Condie was honored in 2018 by the Geological Society of America with the prestigious Penrose Medal. A full biography is available at this link. https://www.geosociety.org/awards/18speeches/penrose.htm
Condie retired from teaching in 2014, but continues as an emeritus faculty member in Earth and Environmental Science, and is considered one of the top-ranked scholars at NMT. Other scientists recognized as Geochemistry Fellows are Dereje Ayalew, Jochen Josef Brocks, Peter A. Cawood, Evelyn Füri, Tetsuo Irifune, Fabrizio Nestola, Christine V. Putnis, Mark Rehkämper, Urs Schaltegger, Fang-Zhen Teng, Satoshi Utsunomiya, Jeffrey Vervoort, Paul J. Wallace, Helen M. Williams, Youxue Zhang.
The organizations’ website describes the importance of this honor. “In awarding Geochemistry
Fellows, our societies believe it is important to recognize the broad spectrum of
scientific achievements that advance geochemistry. Excellence should not be limited
to major discoveries and ideas that change paradigms, and not solely evaluated on
the basis of the number of papers published in high-impact journals; the nominee's
h-index and previously obtained distinctions; nor the amount of funding acquired.
Instead, we recognize
that scientific eminence, achievement, and impact also encompass sustained and proven
contributions that create a dynamic environment essential for scientific progress.”
