More than 70 scientists, physicians, and engineers from around the world attended the International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue 2024 conference held at New Mexico Tech in June.

The purpose was to advance the field of oxygen transport research while providing opportunities for young researchers to engage with experts and peers in all aspects of oxygen transport, measurement, metabolism, and medicine. A substantial portion of the conference addressed various aspects of brain function, including optical measurements of cerebral blood oxygenation and metabolism as well as functional imaging. At least 10 countries and 16 U.S. states were represented among the participants. The conference featured 50 oral presentations and 25 poster presentations, highlighting the latest research and developments in the field.

Eric Shinn, a graduate student from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, said, “I had a great time attending the meeting at New Mexico Tech. I'm glad I got to connect with fellow molecular dynamics practitioners, and friendly scientists researching the topic of oxygen transport. I feel like I learned a lot, having first exposure to techniques I had never known before."

A special Young Researchers Symposium kicked off the conference, intended to foster engagement and collaboration among emerging scientists and included presentations from students and trainees from Europe, Asia, North America, and other regions.

Dr. Sally Pias, professor in NMT's chemistry department, said, "ISOTT is an amazing community of researchers from around the world. At its core is interaction, both scientific and social. The organization includes prominent researchers in a variety of fields, especially medical optics, tumor radiation therapy, and clinical oxygen measurement. Each year, we rotate the meeting around the globe, alternating among unique venues in Europe, Asia, and North America. I am always excited to reunite with my friends and colleagues who make ISOTT a warm, engaging, and creative society."

ISOTT counts 250 members worldwide and was founded in 1973.
