Exploration Day: New Mexico Tech throws open its doors to prospective students and their families
November 08,2023
One day in the fall each year, Tech hosts an open house for interested college-bound STE²M students.
Exploration Day 2023 started off with a bang—literally. More than 100 students, with their parents and siblings were invited to campus for a day of discovery, which started at EMRTC for an explosives demo.
After that, families registered in Fidel Center and received a schedule for the rest of the day. First on the agenda were guided campus tours in small groups. The Jazz Ensemble was set up outside Fitch Hall to entertain visitors, showcasing the active interest in music that many Tech students share.
All the attendees gathered to be welcomed by Dr. Gregory Stringer, director of Admissions, in Fidel Center, and to glean information about applications, residence life and financial aid. The Admissions office was open all day long for students to turn in completed applications or ask specific questions.
Then the groups followed a “choose your own path” kind of schedule and visited the various departments, mingling with professors and current students – from Chemistry to Physics, Biology to Computer Science, from Civil Engineering to the Bureau of Geology, etc. Mechanical Engineering had a demonstration outside of their robotics program.
Lunch was on the house in Fidel and provided time for prospective students to visit the Club Fair. Several student groups and academic programs showcased their activity and contribution to college life. Many stopped in the campus bookstore for NMT-themed gear.
Families departed campus between 2 and 3 p.m. with a greater understanding of what
life at
Tech is like, the array of possibilities for study, and big dreams for a future STE²M
career.
