SOCORRO, N.M. – The Fall 2021 Career Fair promises to be the biggest event of its kind at New Mexico Tech, with a virtual event on Monday, Sept. 13, and a full in-person event on Tuesday, Sept. 14. Sandia National Laboratories is the official sponsor of the event.

About 80 exhibitors will offer excellent opportunities for Tech students to explore jobs, graduate schools and internship options.

Tristine Hayward, Assistant Director of Student Affairs, has lined up private companies, universities, and government agencies to attend the event this fall. The semi-annual event will be on Handshake from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 13. The in-person event will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Fidel Center ballrooms.

Hayward said this year’s presenters have jobs, fellowships, co-ops, scholarships, and internships available for students in every academic department on campus. All students are encouraged to attend and it is never too early to start networking and looking for a job or internship. The complete list of exhibitors is available at https://www.nmt.edu/studentaffairs/careerservices/careerfair.php .

Students and faculty can look at the companies and sort them by major, employment opportunity, location, and more on the career platform, Handshake: nmt.joinhandshake.com.

The job market nationally – and globally – is booming, with more and more jobs opening each quarter. Hayward pointed out that the diversity of companies recruiting at the university is going up. What used to be the domain of mining and petroleum is now opening up for all job seekers.

“Employers know they can find the best and brightest students at New Mexico Tech,” Hayward said. “Recruiters also are aware of the rankings and accolades that Tech earns, such as the recent rankings released in USA Today, Forbes, Niche, and College Factual.”

In addition to the exhibitors, other companies will be conducting job interviews or meet with students this semester. Those companies include Trinity Consulting, Intel, Sandia National Labs, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Mewbourne Oil, The Aerospace Company, Vanderbilt School of Engineering, and Claremont. Students can prepare themselves for the Career Fair in several ways. First, students should research the companies in attendance and what their specialties are. Hayward encourages students to bring résumés and dress professionally at the fair.

The Career Closet, located in the Student Affairs Office, is available for students who need professional clothing for the fair.  The lending closet has men and women’s professional suites, ties and shoes. Check out is free and garments are available  to keep as the closet is overstuffed with great items.

The Student Affairs Office is also hosting workshops to help students prepare for the fair. Résumé and cover letter writing workshops are at noon and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, in the Career Services office (Fidel 262).

Interviewing skills workshops will be at noon and 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, in Fidel 262. This workshop is important for anyone who is seriously considering an internship or employment.

Two “Preparing for the Fair” workshops will be available – at noon and 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, in Fidel 262. These workshops are especially important for first-timers. Topics include proper dress, introductions, what to expect and free personal business cards for those who attend. Students will also hear tips for doing pre-fair research on the recruiters.

A Flash résumé review session is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, in the Fidel Center atrium. Students are encouraged to stop by for an impromptu look at their resumes.

“This is very helpful to students who are very busy and don’t have much time to sit and chat about their resumes,” Hayward said. “We give it a look over and the students can make the necessary changes without much fuss.”

“We are here to help students make the transition from student to a career,” Hayward said. “These workshops and the career fairs are important events to help students. I encourage Techies to take advantage of the services we offer because they do work.”
