2020 Spring Career Fair Boasts New Recruiters
January 23, 2020
Wilson & Company signs on as title sponsor for annual event

SOCORRO, N.M. – The Spring 2020 Career Fair will offer excellent opportunity for Tech students explore career opportunities and, of course, graduate schools, co-ops, and internship options.
Tristine Hayward, Assistant Director of Student Affairs, expects about 50 companies, universities, and government agencies to attend the event this spring. The semi-annual event will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 4th, at the Fidel Center.
This year’s event features a title sponsor: Wilson & Company Inc., Engineers and Architects, a national engineering and architecture firm with award-winning multi-disciplinary projects and culture defined by exceptional relationships. Coming from Albuquerque, they are looking to hire mechanical, electrical, civil, and environmental engineering students for full-time and intern positions.
Hayward said this year’s presenters have jobs, fellowships, co-ops, scholarships, and internships available for students in every academic department on campus. The complete list of exhibitors is available at https://www.nmt.edu/studentaffairs/careerservices/careerfair.php. Students and faculty can look at the companies and sort them by major, employment opportunity, location, and more on the new career platform, Handshake: nmt.joinhandshake.com.
“Handshake has been very important to getting the word out to new companies about our Career Fairs,” Hayward said. “This fair includes eight new companies that have never been to one of our fairs before. And Handshake is important to students as well. Students with profiles on Handshake have the option to make their profile public. This is a great way for students to put their resume in a place where employers can see them and contact them directly about job opportunities.
“Employers know they can find the best and brightest students at New Mexico Tech,” Hayward said. “Recruiters also are aware of the rankings and accolades that Tech earns, such as the recent rankings released in USA Today.”
This spring’s fair includes several new companies: ATEC, Bridgers & Paxton, the City of Albuquerque Consulting Engineers, Colorado Department of Education, Combat Capabilities Development Command - Data and Analysis Center, National Renewable Energy Lab, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Senspex.
In addition to the exhibitors, other companies will be on campus to conduct job interviews with students this semester, including NAVAIR TMC Design Corporation, and the US Department of State. Info Sessions will be held by NAVAIR, Pacific Northwest National Lab, and the US Department of State. For the complete list of information sessions, go to https://www.nmt.edu/studentaffairs/careerservices/workshops.php.
Students can prepare themselves for the Career Fair in several ways. First, students should research the companies in attendance and what their specialties are. Hayward encourages students to bring résumés and dress professionally to the fair.
The Career Closet, located in the Student Services offices, is available for students who need professional clothing for the fair. The lending closet has men and women’s professional suites, ties and shoes. Check out is free but come early for best selection.
The Student Affairs Office is also hosting four workshops to help students prepare for the fair. Résumé and cover letter writing workshops are at noon and 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, in the Career Services office (Fidel 262).
Interviewing skills workshops will be at noon and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, in Fidel 262. This workshop is important for anyone who is seriously considering an internship or employment.
“Preparing for the Fair” workshops are at noon and 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, in Fidel 262. This workshop is especially important for first-timers. Topics include proper dress, introductions, what to expect and free personal business cards for those who attend. Students will also hear tips for doing pre-fair research on the presenters and will receive a copy of the Career Fair Booklet. All workshops will include free food.
Flash résumé review sessions are scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Jan. 30 and 31, in the Fidel Center atrium. Students are encouraged to stop by for an impromptu look at their resumes.
This year representatives from Sandia National Labs will be on hand to review resumes with the Career Services staff. “This is very helpful to students who are very busy and don’t have much time to sit and chat, but want to see what industry professionals are looking for in a resume” Hayward said.
“We are here to help students make the transition from student to a career,” Hayward said. “These workshops and the career fairs are important events to help students. I encourage Techies to take advantage of the services we offer because they do work.”
