Spring Career Fair Boasts New Recruiters

Career Services Offering Preparatory Workshops

SOCORRO, N.M. – The Spring 2019 Career Fair will offer excellent opportunity for Tech students explore career opportunities and, of course, graduate schools, co-ops, and internship options.
Tristine Hayward, Assistant Director of Student Affairs, expects more than 50 companies, universities, and government agencies to attend the event this spring. The semi-annual event will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Fidel Center.
Hayward said this year’s presenters have jobs, fellowships, co-ops, scholarships, and internships available for students in every academic department on campus. The complete list of exhibitors is available at https://www.nmt.edu/studentaffairs/careerservices/careerfair.php. Students and faculty can look at the companies and sort them by major, employment opportunity, location, and more on the new career platform, Handshake: nmt.joinhandshake.com.
“Handshake has been very important to getting the word out to new companies about our Career Fairs,” Hayward said. “This fair includes nine new companies that have never been to one of our fairs before. And Handshake is important to students as well. In the past year and a half since we got Handshake we have added thousands of new employers to the school, resulting in over two thousand more job applications than before Handshake.”
Students with profiles on Handshake have the option to make their profile public. This is a great way for students to put their resume in a place where employers can see them and contact them directly about job opportunities.
“Employers know they can find the best and brightest students at New Mexico Tech,” Hayward said. “Recruiters also are aware of the rankings and accolades that Tech earns, such as the recent rankings released in USA Today.”
In addition to the exhibitors, other companies will be on campus to conduct job interviews with students this semester. Those companies are Freeport McMoRan, NAVAIR, 704 Test Group, Core Lab, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Technip FMC, and Tokyo Electron US Holdings. For the complete list of information sessions, go to http://www.nmt.edu/information-sessions-a-interviews.
Students can prepare themselves for the Career Fair in several ways. First, students should research the companies in attendance and what their specialties are. Hayward encourages students to bring résumés and dress professionally to the fair.
The Career Closet, located in the Student Services offices, is available for students who need professional clothing for the fair. The lending closet has men and women’s professional suites, ties and shoes. Check out is free but come early for best selection.
The Student Affairs Office is also hosting four workshops to help students prepare for the fair. Résumé and cover letter writing workshops are at noon and 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, in the Career Services office (Fidel 262).
Interviewing skills workshops will be at noon and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, in Fidel 262. This workshop is important for anyone who is seriously considering an internship or employment.
“Preparing for the Fair” workshops are at noon and 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, in Fidel 262. This workshop is especially important for first-timers. Topics include proper dress, introductions, what to expect and free personal business cards for those who attend. Students will also hear tips for doing pre-fair research on the presenters.
Flash résumé review sessions are scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, in the Fidel Center atrium. Students are encouraged to stop by for an impromptu look at their resumes.
“This is very helpful to students who are very busy and don’t have much time to sit and chat about their resumes,” Hayward said. “We give it a look over and the students can make the necessary changes without much fuss.”
There will be free food and drinks at the workshops.
“We are here to help students make the transition from student to a career,” Hayward said. “These workshops and the career fairs are important events to help students. I encourage Techies to take advantage of the services we offer because they do work.”
