25th Annual President's Golf Tourney Kicks Off
September 12, 2019
SOCORRO, N.M. – Tech supporters kicked off the President’s Golf Tournament on Thursday morning, marking the 25th annual event and a record-breaking fund-raising effort.
Over the course of two days, more than 250 golfers and dozens of sponsors will contribute
more than $200,000 to the President’s Scholarship Fund.
“This tournament, which was started 25 years ago, has proven very beneficial to students who run short on money to complete their education,” said university president Dr. Stephen G. Wells. “I tip my hat to Dr. Dan Lopez for making sure that our students can finish their degrees.”
About two dozen students receive scholarships from the golf tournament fund every year. The event kicked off Thursday, Sept. 12, with a VIP flight for major sponsors. Friday’s play will include two flights, meals for all golfers and gourmet snacks on the course.
Everyone enjoys a beautiful day on the golf course, great meals and good company. The winning teams go home with some prizes. The ultimate reward, however, is reserved for the New Mexico Tech students who received Presidential Tuition Assistance scholarships.
This fall, more than two dozen college students – many of whom might not have been able to afford tuition – will continue their studies thanks to the generosity of tournament donors and sponsors.
The bulk of the recipients are fifth-year seniors who have run out of scholarships and full-time undergraduates who don’t have the resources to put themselves through college.
