NMT Adds New Business Certificate Program

Management Department offering will require 18 credit hours

SOCORRO, N.M. – New Mexico Tech recently approved a new Business Certificate Program that is designed to provide a post-secondary educational experience that focuses on business fundamentals.

The new program is aimed at local residents, business owners, government and public school employees, NM Tech employees, and current NMT students. Dr. Frank Reinow, chair of the Business and Technology Management Department, said that program is intended to meet the diverse educational needs in Socorro and prepare students for future career opportunities. 

“This program was designed to meet the needs of local business and government organizations for basic business knowledge and skills taught by New Mexico Tech faculty,” Reinow said. “This demonstrates is our commitment to the Socorro community.”

The curriculum is based on existing courses taught through the NM Tech Department of Business and Technology Management and other departments. A high school or GED is required for admission.  

Program Outcomes:

  1. Build your business knowledge and skills in accounting, economics, and management.
  2. Strengthen your math and writing skills required of business professionals.
  3. Prepare you to assume greater responsibilities in your chosen field of interest.
  4. Build a cadre of professionals who can start their own businesses or work for new ones locating in Socorro County, and expand the local economy.

The Certificate in Business will require 18 credits selected from the following courses:

  1. Nine credit hours chosen from the following:

Accounting 201 (3) or Accounting 202 (3); Economics 251 (3) or Economics 252 (3); Management 330 (3) or Management 331 (3).

  1. English 111 (3) or 112 (3)
  2. Mathematics: three credit hours chosen from Math 101, 103 (3), 104 (3), and 131.
  3. Technical Communications 151 (3)

Students who complete courses can also use the credits toward an associate’s degree in business.
