Two NMT Scientists Named Fellows of the Geological Society of America

Heizler and McLemore join a dozen other NMT scientists as GSA Fellows

 

SOCORRO, N.M. – Two scientists at the N.M. Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources were recently elected fellows of the Geological Society of America. 

Matt Heizler in the field Dr. Matt Heizler and Dr. Virginia McLemore received this top award, which is conferred on "the best of our profession" from the GSA. 

University President Dr. Stephen Wells, who is a former president of the GSA and a GSA Fellow, extended his congratulations and well wishes to Heizler and McLemore.

"As past president of the Geological Society of America, a Geological Society of America Fellow, and President of New Mexico Tech, I want to congratulate Drs. Virginia McLemore and Matt Heizler on the recent selection as Fellows of the Geological Society of America,” Wells said.

Being selected as a Fellow to the Society is one of the highest recognitions for geoscientist as it is an acknowledgement of sustained and significant professional endeavors and accomplishments."

Heizler was named a Fellow of the Geological Society of America for his sustained record of distinguished contributions to the field of geoscience research, particularly in the field of argon geochronology. Heizler’s 200 published papers underscore his remarkable productivity, but the salient characteristics of his career are his scientific originality and perseverance.

McLemore was named a Fellow of the Geological Society of America for her sustained record of distinguished contributions to the field of geoscience research. She has also been notably productive in applied geoscience, and training of geologists.

They will be recognized at the Presidential Address and Awards Ceremony at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America in Phoenix in September 2019.

Heizler and McLemore join several other Bureau scientists and NMT professors who are GSA Fellows. They include

  • NMT President Dr. Stephen G. Wells;
  • Former NMT president Dr. Larry Lattman;
  • Bureau of Geology Director Dr. Nelia Dunbar;
  • Bureau scientists Dr. Shari Kelley, Dr. Bill McIntosh and Dr. Steve Cather;
  • Bureau scientist emeriti Dr. George Austin, Dr. Charles Chapin, Dr. John Hawley, Dr. Dave Love, and Dr. Marshall Reiter;
  • NMT professors emeriti Dr. Kent Condie, Dr. Phil Kyle, Dr. Fred Phillips, and Dr. John Wilson; and
  • NMT professor Dr. Gary Axen.
