Albuquerque Academy Wins Science Olympiad
February 23, 2010
The high school championship was the sixth consecutive victory for Academy, while the middle school returned to the top spot after being defeated by the Albuquerque Area Home Schoolers in 2009.
The top three schools in the 'C' Division (high school) were identical to the 2009 results, with the Albuquerque Home Schoolers finishing second and La Cueva High School in third. (See complete team results at right).
In the 'B' Division (middle school), Academy edged the Home Schoolers, with Gutierrez Middle School of Roswell finishing third.
The Academy high school team won 10 of the 23 events, finished second in eight others and had two other top 10 finishes.
The Home Schoolers won five events, finished second in six, third in two events and had nine other top 10 finishes.
Lovington High School, which finished fifth overall, won the spirit award for the second year in a row. The Coach of the Year award went to Hatch Valley High School teacher Kelly Weiler.
Houston Middle School of Hobbs won the spirit award for the 'B' Division. The Coach of the Year award went to Beverly Reno of Hoover Middle School of Albuquerque.
The two Albuquerque Academy teams qualify to compete in the national Science Olympiad event in Champagne, Ill., in April.
The daylong event featured more than 600 students from 24 high schools and 23 middle schools, competing in 23 events at each level. Students -- mostly in pairs -- took written exams, tested their engineering contraptions and conducted scientific experiments in laboratories across campus.
New Mexico Tech professors, researchers and students operated, judged and hosted each event. Most students competed in multiple events, juggling schedules to fit in timed written exams with drop-in events. Hundreds of parents and fans followed students from event to event, cheering them on as their planes flew, rockets launched, mousetrap vehicles drove and wooden bridges strained to failure.
The event's atmosphere resemebled any other sporting event. Nearly all of the teams wore their school colors, with many wearing displaying specialized Science Olympiad gear. Some Hobbs students wore face paint. Wilson Middle School students had personalized lab coats. Hatch Valley's team included a few girls in cheerleader uniforms. Other slogans included "Geek Squad", "Sci-Borgs" and "iNERD."
Saturday's event also saw New Mexico Tech award scholarships to the 12 top-scoring seniors. The top three seniors were all from Socorro High -- Mariah Deters, Moaaz Soliman and Siddhartha Dhawan. Other top seniors included Kevin Henry and Tayler Hale of Cloudcroft, Neil Goel and Laura Montoya of Sandia High, Jim Howe of Adacemy, Elizabeth Walkup of the Home Schoolers, Lauren Reed of Rio Rancho and Shayne Duff of Farmington.
