Record graduation classes and a thriving economy are among the reasons New Mexico Tech President Stephen Wells gives for the university’s recent decline in enrollment.
Wells said overall enrollment was down 5.6 percent. Enrollment for both undergraduate and graduate students is 1,895 for the fall semester, down from 2,009 in the fall of 2017.
“Last year was our largest graduating class ever,” Wells said. “We had 408 degrees conferred. We’ve had the largest graduation numbers in the school’s history in three years with 1,203 degrees conferred.”
Wells said 369 new undergraduate students enrolled this fall, including transfers. That represents a jump of 12 percent over last year. ...
