Bureau of Reclamation funds $400,000 for desalination project at two southern N.M. sites

An innovative research project begun last year by students under Professor Frank Huang of New Mexico Tech’s Environmental and Civil Engineering Department will be receiving additional funding from USDA’s Bureau of Reclamation.

According to a notification from the Bureau of Reclamation, the pilot-scale project for desalination of brackish or salty water will be funded for the next two years.

“(The Bureau of) Reclamation anticipates awarding Federal Funds in the amount of $200,000 for the first year of the project and $199,488 for the second year...” the notice states.

 

In 2017 Huang’s student research group constructed a fairly large device for geothermal water purification, and last summer began testing their trailer-mounted Membrane Distillation Pilot Plant at Masson Farms’ geothermal greenhouse in Radium Springs. ...
