CARES: Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (HEERF I)

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act was passed by Congress and signed into law to provide economic relief from COVID-19. 

NMT signed and returned the Certification and Agreement to the U.S. Department of Education and intends to use no less than 50 percent of the funds received of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students. 

A total of $1,353,197 was awarded to NMT under section 18004(a)(1). $676,599 was applied to emergency financial aid grants to students and $676,598 was assigned for the Institutional portion, of which almost half of the amount has been applied toward refunds of room and board charges made to student accounts.

NMT received additional CARES Act funding as a recognized minority serving institution (MSI). A total of $101,058 was awarded to NMT under section 18004(a)(2). 

CRRSAA: Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (HEERF II)

The Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA) established the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II (HEERF II), which allocated funding to institutions of higher education.

NMT received a total of $2,260,548 funding through the CRRSAA program through the US Department of Education. $676,599 was for financial grants to students. $1,444,605 was for the institutional portion. $139,344 was for minority serving institution portion.

ARP: American Rescue Plan (HEERF III)

The Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund III (HEERD III) is authorized by the American Rescue Plan, Public Law 117-2, signed into law on March 11, 2011,  providing financial assistance to higher education institutions, as well as students. 

A total of $3,985,251 was awarded to NMT. $1,873,666 was for financial grants to students to assist with any component of their cost of attendance or for emergency cost that arise due to coronavirus. $1,872,902 was for the institutional portion. $238,683 was for minority serving institution portion.  

Following the guidance of the Department of Education, NMT prioritized distributions based on students’ financial need. NMT sent out an application invitation to all students. Students who are eligible for Pell Grant receive their distributions first and all others receive their distributions immediately after completing the application form.
