Call for Participation in research cruise offshore Oregon aboard R/V Langseth

Application deadline: April 1, 2022

Cruise dates: July 27 – August 21, 2022

Ports: Newport, Oregon (sail out & in)

PIs: Rob Harris, Glenn Spinelli, Anne Tréhu

We invite applications from undergraduate students, graduate students, post-docs, and early-career scientists to participate in an NSF-funded research cruise aboard the R/V Marcus G. Langseth focused on understanding hydrothermal circulation in oceanic crust approaching the Cascadia subduction zone. This project will involve the collection of seafloor heat flux data and high-resolution 2D multi-channel seismic reflection data along a series of transects that cross basaltic basement highs and propagator wakes. The overarching goal is to determine the effects hydrothermal circulation on the thermal state of the Juan de Fuca plate near the deformation front of the Cascadia subduction zone.

The research cruise is scheduled from July 27 - August 21, 2022; it will depart from and return to Newport, Oregon. Participants will be members of the scientific party and be involved in acquisition, onboard processing, and interpretation of marine heat flux data, seismic data, and other underway geophysical data. Applicants do not need to have previous experience with collecting or analyzing these types of data.  We intend for this research cruise to provide opportunities for early-career scientists to gain familiarity with these types of data and analyses. Funds are available to cover travel and subsistence costs for US-based scientists.

To apply to participate, please send a CV and 1-page statement of interest and experience to Glenn Spinelli (glenn.spinelli<at>nmt.edu).  Applications from students (undergraduate or graduate) require a letter of support from an advisor or supervisor.

Application Deadline: April 1, 2022
