SPOTLIGHT ON RESOURCES
INSPEC at LANL at Tech

Good news for astronomy, electrical engineering, computer science, physics, physical chemistry, and material engineering students. Searching for journal articles in your field has just become quick and easy.
INSPEC at LANL is now available to the Tech community. INSPEC covers the world’s literature in all aspects of physics, electronics and computing from 4,200 journals and 1000 conferences. Books, technical reports and dissertations are also included.
If you have used SciSearch® at LANL, you will find INSPEC easy to search, because it has the same interface and help screens. When you are doing chemical searches or searching for astronomical objects, you might take a look at the help notes.
Coverage begins in 1969 and is updated weekly. INSPEC corresponds to the print publications Physical Abstracts (Tech Library has 1925—1996), Electrical and Electronics Abstracts (Tech Library has 1967—1996), and Computer and Control Abstracts (Tech Library has1971—1996). INSPEC covers these three indexes which we no longer receive in print format. If you are searching a topic in physics which goes back in time, you might want to search the print Physics Abstracts. You can find the subject key to INSPEC, INSPEC Thesaurus, in the Reference section (REF. Z695.1 .P5 I57 1995).
Access INSPEC from the library’s homepage (http://www.nmt.edu/~nmtlib) or go directly to http://inspec.lanl.gov/nmt/.
Have you been frustrated because you couldn’t look in SciSearch® for journal articles published before 1995? Good news! Tech Library contracted for access to journal articles published between 1985 and 1994 giving our users access now from 1985 to the present. Remember that SciSearch® at LANL is updated weekly and that it covers a broad range of journals in science, medicine, technology and related fields. SciSearch® is a superior interdisciplinary source for up-to-date citation information.
The Library was able to contract for 10 back years because the New Mexico State Legislature allocated capital outlay funds to Tech and other university libraries last Spring. Thanks are due Tech administrators, Pres. López, V-Pres. Peterson and others who lobbied on behalf of state academic libraries.
Now that we access almost 15 years of publication data, note the date range options. The default is 1997 to the present. If you want to search back years, you must change the date range.
If you want to learn more about search options, ask any staff member. We can arrange custom training sessions for groups as small as 2 or 3. Call -5891 (Reference Desk) or -5615 (Director’s office).

I would like you to replace the old telephone books of Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Washington, D.C. with new ones. I know the state of New Mexico is a very poor state, but I do believe you have the money to buy the new phone books. Request you take action ASAP.
Response:
The phone books in the Library were obtained free of charge from USWest. Instead of buying more phonebooks we have set links to a number of online phone directories including USWest Dex (http://www.uswestdex.com/). This directory is easy to use and pretty fast. To find a list of other online phone directories, go to Tech Library’s homepage (http://www.nmt.edu/~nmtlib/) select "Resources by Subject", then select "Reference Collection." If you need help accessing information in these online directories, please stop by the reference desk for assistance.
Please, please, please, extend your hours!
Response:
Beginning with the Fall semester, we have extended our hours until midnight most days, and we open earlier and close later on the weekends.
While classes are in session, library hours are:
Monday – Thursday 8am—midnight
Friday 8am—8pm
Saturday 9am—10pm
Sunday 9am—midnight
I think it would be a good idea if you could decorate the study rooms downstairs a little. It wouldn’t have to be much, maybe just repainting the walls in a warmer color, or maybe just put some border on the walls. Perhaps some comfortable chairs might help too (papasan chairs?) The library is an ideal place to study and those who study downstairs often might like a less sterile atmosphere down there. Thanks for your time.
Response:
There is currently artwork downstairs which we think is very nice. However, we will consider putting up some colorful posters and look into the chairs.
Turn up the heat, it’s freezing in here!
Response:
We apologize for the fluctuating temperature in the library. During the recent cold snap, Joe Pino, George Green, and Leo Guerra were making the rounds of all campus buildings, making sure the heat was working properly. They found a problem with one of our pumps, but they fixed it the same day. We can’t compliment Joe, Leo, and George enough. Thanks guys!

Happy Thanksgiving from Tech Library Staff! We all have so much to be thankful for.
"I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing."
— Agatha Christie, British writer.
