Welcome to the New Mexico Tech Joseph R. Skeen Library

At their meeting March 4, 2002, Tech Regents voted to name the library in honor of Joseph R. Skeen, New Mexico's long time representative from the Second Congressional District.

Hedges and Williams Donate $1000.00 to Buy Books

Kathleen Hedges of Tech's Office of Advancement and Walter Jon Williams, author, have donated one thousand dollars to the library as part of New Mexico Tech's capital campaign. This generous donation has been allocated for purchase of books selected by students through the Student Association Library Committee and the Graduate Student Association. At the end of the spring semester, students sent their suggestions to Harvey Kuzushko of the SA and Kay Krehbiel, Library Director. Final selections were made and will be posted on the library bulletin board and in the next library newsletter. Watch for these books on the new book shelf in the Kuellmer Reading Room. Thanks to all who participated.

We want more students to participate. During the fall semester 2002 and spring 2003, students will be asked again to tell the library what books you want us to buy. Use the library's online suggestion box at www.nmt.edu/~nmt.edu by clicking on Services and then Ask a Reference Question. Or email your suggestion to a Student Association representative to be announced or to the library director.

Don and Rosie Tripp Conference Room Dedicated

New Mexico Tech Library's conference room was renamed in a dedication ceremony on Saturday, April 27, 2002, as friends and family gathered to honor Don and Rosie Tripp. Tech President Daniel H. López and Vice President for Institutional Development Herb Fernandez expressed their thanks to the Tripps for the generous contribution to Tech Library, and for the ongoing support of education and New Mexico Tech. Both Don and Rosie have been advocates for libraries through their roles as community leaders and public servants.

Director Kay Krehbiel spoke about what the contribution to the library's online journal resources would mean to Tech faculty, researchers and students. She reminisced about taking classes with Don and Rosie and how their children had grown up as contemporaries. During the ceremony a plaque was unveiled commemorating the room as the Don and Rosie Tripp Conference Room.

Interlibrary Loan to Host ILL Workshop

The Interlibrary Loan Department will host the New Mexico ILL Practitioner's Workshop at the New Mexico Tech Skeen Library, May 20, 2002, in conjunction with the NM State Library and Socorro Public Library. ILL practitioners from throughout the state will meet in the Don and Rosie Tripp Conference Room for technical training as well as discussion of technological challenges and complexities relevant to ILL staff statewide.

Welcome new Skeen Library staff members

Joani Shedivy joined our staff in late January following five years as Science and Technology Reference Librarian at Auburn University Libraries in Alabama. If you attended a performance of the "Pirates of Penzance" in April, you saw Joani in the role of a fierce pirate. Joani's position is Information Literacy Librarian.

We are pleased to welcome Peter Martinez to the library staff. Peter is the Library Systems Specialist and he maintains the library's computer systems and the library web page. Pete has worked at New Mexico Tech for 9 1/2 years for EMRTC and ISD.

CHEMICAL ABSTRACTS SEARCHING

The New Mexico Tech Library offers STN Chemical Abstracts searches for Tech Faculty and Students.
Through the STN Academic Program, searches conducted AFTER 5:00 P.M. are given a special rate. These searches must be related to teaching and/or research at New Mexico Tech, and not for a commercial use.

EACH SEMESTER, Tech Library will pay for up to $50 of searching per student or faculty member.
