WELCOME NEW STUDENTS!!

WHAT’S NEW

Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Library Newsletter! Here you will find all kinds of useful information about New Mexico Tech Library including such things as new resources, new books, staff, changes at the library and other items that we hope will inform you about your library.

Greetings from the library director!

The old image of a college library is a quiet, perhaps dark, place with many books where nothing moves or much happens. Yet change and challenge are more realistically the norm for Tech Library. There is usually something new, such as ProQuest Direct online index with complete articles now accessible on the Web. Or we are in the process of making changes large and small to improve our resources and services. We want you to know what’s new in the library and at the same time we want to hear from you. Write up your ideas and drop them in the suggestion box or send them from our Web page. Come in and ask for help in person or by e-mail.

Joining the library:

Food

Do you like shopping for books at Borders or Page One because you can stop for something to drink and eat? About the time classes begin you will be able to buy snacks and bottled drinks, and relax in the library’s new snack room.

The reader/printer, microform file cabinets and photocopiers are being moved around the corner to make room for 2 vending machines, small tables and chairs. The vending machines will offer bottled water, fruit drinks and nuts, chips and cookies. You can bring in your own bottled drinks and lunch into the snack room. While you can take your bottled water or other closed drink containers anywhere in the library, we ask that you consume food only in the snack room.

New resources

The library has just acquired and installed The New Mexico Geochronological Database. Published by New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources, this database contains information to 1996 on published and unpublished radiometric ages of rocks in New Mexico. It is available on the Vonnegut PC on the main floor.

A list of new books is available monthly on the Library Web page. Just click on the link listed under "Tech Library Information", or go to:

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q. Does the library have complete journal articles I can print or download?

A. Through ProQuest Direct, an online index to magazine and journals articles, you can find and print complete full text articles from over 1400 different journal titles. An easy way to find ProQuest Direct is to look on the library’s home page (http://www.nmt.edu/~nmtlib). Another group of journals with complete full text of articles can be found through the Periodicals Dept. web page. For over 40 journals along with our print subscription, we receive free access to the electronic version of the journals.

Q. Why is the Library not open after 5:00 p.m. on Fridays?

A. The Library is currently advertising for a person to operate the library and give reference and information services on Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays. When the new position is filled, we will also be open Saturdays and Sundays over semester breaks.

Q. What is the huge animal on the wall in the library reading lounge?

A. The "Miner's Friend," a burro's head, was created by local fabric/material artist, Holly Hughes who has a link on the library's homepage. When New Mexico Tech was called the New Mexico School of Mines, the school mascot was the burro with an old miner. For years burros carried prospectors and their gear into the New Mexico mountains. Take a close look at our burro, which is constructed of materials from golf clubs to electrical wire, from many departments on campus. And while you are on the second floor, visit Einstein, also created by Holly Hughes. He must be seen to be believed!
