Welcome From the Dean of Students Office
The primary purpose of the DOS is to create opportunities for student success, and as part of that commitment, we serve as student advocates. Our office provides information on a variety of issues and student services. The DOS is a central point of contact for students who need to resolve issues, need further explanation of New Mexico Tech’s policies and procedures, or are trying to identify campus resources. We understand that all students have individual circumstances that contribute both to their success, and when they fall short of their goals. In recognizing these parameters, we strive to make problem-solving as seamless as possible for those students who are affected by extenuating circumstances during their college careers. We are generally available during normal University business hours, or by appointment, and I personally encourage students to stop by and visit if they need help or have questions about the services we provide. A Message for Parents and FamiliesYour son or daughter’s transition to collegiate life is both rewarding and challenging. Students undergo intellectual and personal growth, and explore a new level of independence as they prepare for academic rigors, careers and lifelong learning beyond New Mexico Tech. As family, you have a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in the success of your student. For many of our students, family members are advisors, mentors and role models. It is our hope that this website – and any feedback you can provide – will help you connect to services and departments at New Mexico Tech that can help your son or daughter succeed. Although New Mexico Tech has evolved over time to meet the changing needs of our global world, the fundamental strategies for student enrichment and success have not changed. On this website, our goal is to provide families of New Mexico Tech students with information they can use to help support their sons or daughters to succeed academically, and to thrive personally. Join us in supporting the success of all our students, by letting us know what we can do to help. Student AbsencesAs a service to faculty and students, our office will send absence notifications to the respective faculty member(s) should a student absence be longer than five days. This service only will be utilized when an absence is for a family/student medical issue, death of a family member, military leave, or a New Mexico Tech-sponsored activity. However, our office may assist in verifying absences that are five days or less on a case-by-case basis, at the request of a faculty member, and we will encourage the student to speak directly with his or her professor. This absence notification process is only meant as a notification, and is not intended to excuse the absence itself, which is entirely up to the respective faculty member teaching the class.
Notification of the Death of a StudentThere is nothing more difficult than the loss of one of our students. It is a heartbreaking event for family and friends of the student, and for the entire New Mexico Tech community of faculty, staff and fellow students. In dealing with the death of a student, the University faces the challenges of coping with the many ramifications of such a loss. Our most important responsibility is to contact the student’s family and to do our best to attend to their needs. The Dean of Students Office serves as the primary contact office following the loss of a student. We contact the family and serve as a University liaison for them. We also notify the student’s faculty instructors and all appropriate New Mexico Tech offices responsible for processing and closing his or her records. Please contact me personally, should you know that a student has passed away, at 575-835-5880. |
Welcome to the website of the New Mexico Tech Dean of Students Office. My name is Melissa Jaramillo-Fleming, and I welcome this opportunity to introduce myself and my administrative assistant, Myrna Lucero, and to acquaint you with the functions of the Dean of Students Office (DOS).
Please remind your son or daughter to: Attend class regularly and do all assigned homework. Get involved outside the classroom. Introduce himself or herself to professors/instructors during office hours. Seek help as soon as a difficulty arises: More options are generally available for those who seek assistance early on.
