Socorro is a sunny, friendly town of 9000, located in central New Mexico. Socorro is in the heart of ranching and farming territory, but its main industries are education and research. The two biggest employers in town are New Mexico Tech and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Socorro offers a pleasant combination of relaxed rural life and the intellectually stimulating life of a college town.

In addition, Socorro has easy access to the great outdoors. Some of the popular activities in the area are mountain and road biking, running, rock climbing, and desert and mountain hiking. Elevations range from 4,600 to nearly 11,000 feet. Snow skiing is available in Albuquerque and further north; caving is a popular activity in the southern part of the state, and water sports are available at Elephant Butte Lake, one hour south. Around Socorro, you can find everything from forest-covered mountains to rugged rock formations to a placid, green river.
