Community Honor Code  

This  page outlines progress on the NMT Community Honor Code, per the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan. The current draft of the Community Honor Code, Affirmation and Attestation are shown below. We are actively requesting your input to shape the Community Honor Code.

 

Community Honor Code Forums: Get Involved!

We are holding forums to provide an opportunity for our community to ask questions, provide input, and discuss options for the proposed Community Honor Code and its implementation.  Currently, the following forums are scheduled. You are invited to attend and participate or talk with a member of the committee. The committee members and President Wells will attend as each of the forums if they are available. Note that while the student and faculty forums are scheduled for one hour, the rooms are reserved for two hours in case of lively discussion.

Intent of Community Honor Code  

 

The Community Honor Code’s intent is to be an overarching statement of community focus and climate with respect to our institutional reputation and integrity as a whole. It is aligned with New Mexico Tech’s Strategic Plan with integrity defined as an enduring, guiding principle for New Mexico Tech’s continued growth and development as a quality STEM institution of higher education.

The Affirmation serves to personally endorse our commitment to the ideals of the code.

The Attestation addresses student accountability with respect to academics.

Community Honor Code  

 

As an engaged and diverse community of students, faculty, staff, administrators, and regents, New Mexico Tech embraces the core tenets of personal honesty and integrity, responsibility, mutual respect and inclusion, equity, and trust as the principled foundation for professional behavior and as an ethical cornerstone of its code of conduct.  These tenets are the essence of our character. They guide the direction of the University with respect to its purpose, governance, overall operation, commitment to academic and research excellence, and fostering of personal and professional achievement. Every member of the university community has an obligation to act ethically and professionally in all institutional endeavors, to nurture a climate protective of diversity and free inquiry, and to respect the rights, dignity, opportunities, and welfare of all community members.

Below are some of the questions the committee and community have asked with respect to the NMT Community Honor Code and its implementation. Initially, we are collecting questions and we will address these as the answers are clarified. Current answers are prelimary (tentative) and will be clarified as we progress. If you have additional questions, please contact us or include them in your response to the survey linked above. 

 

What suggestions help us make this the postive, community building process that is intended.

    1. Have a monthly Community Honor Award that is given to a person that goes above and beyond the community expectations in an institutional endeavor.
    2. Have an annual Community Honor Code Day to celebrate advancing our community ethics and professionalism.

What other versions of the Community Honor Code are being discussed?

    1. As a member of the NMT Community, I am obliged to act ethically and professionally in all institutional endeavors.

How is the Honor Code Affirmation going to be implemented?

    • a. Who keeps track of who has/has not affirmed?
      • For employees, the affirmation would be in the employee file in Human Resources (tentative). 
      • For students, the affirmation would be in the permanent file in the Registrar's Office (tentative).
      • If we this is a Regent's policy, affirmation will not be needed for this to be in effect; we will not have to keep track of affirmations. In this case affirmations will be the positive statement of intentions in whatever form.
    • b. Is it mandatory? If so, what happens if one does not affirm?
      • If the Community Honor Code is approved by the Regents as a Regent's policy, then it applies to everyone whether they affirm or not (tentative).
    • c. Mandatory or not, will there be a public black list (names of those who have not affirmed)?
      • If the Community Honor Code is approved by the Regents as a Regent's policy, then it applies to everyone whether they affirm or not. For that reason, making affirmation mandatory is advisable so that everyone knows that it applies to them if they are a member of the community (tentative).  
    • d. Mandatory or not, can one opt out later? 
      • No, it will apply to the entire community (tentative).
    • e. Is it a once-in-a-lifetime affirmation? Or yearly? Or semesterly? …
      • Other institution's experience suggests that annual affirmation is effective (tentative).
    • f. How do you file a complaint?
    • g. How are complaints handled?
    • h. How are sanctions handled?

 

But we already have an academic honesty policy. Isn't this the same thing?

    1. The academic honesty policy deals with some important and very specific issues in academics, but the honor code applies more broadly and most importantly, it applies to all of us.

 

    Students don't want to be snitches. Isn't this just going to alienate and divide our community?

      1. While we are still discussing the "reporting" aspects of the community honor code, we want our community members to help each other live up to the high standards of our institution. That includes talking to people who are crossing boundaries outside of our community expectations, whether those are related to academic dishonesty, sexual harrasment, or bullying. Calm and thoughtful reminders for those who are making a mistake can bring attention to errors while they are still manageable and prevent more serious consequences. As members of an educational community, we have legal responsibilities to report some things, such as sexual misconduct, but we also have an obligation to ensure we are providing the best possible eduction to our students. Through all of our actions, we serve as role models for what we expect of others. Students who "cheat to get by" will never be as successful as they would be if they learn the material (knowledge, skills, and abilities) and make it their own to use throughout their career. It is a disservice to everyone to allow cheating to damage the cheater's education and the reputation of every graduate from the same program.  Ultimately our goal is improving our community and promoting the excellence of our members and the institution. We value your input on how to achieve this goal in a supportive way.

     

      Similar implementation questions about the Student Attestation:

        • a) Can it be written in a more positive form?
          • A positive statement has been suggested and something like the following should be considered: "I hereby affirm that I have abided by all aspects of the honor code while completing this work."  
        • b) Is it mandatory? What happens if one does not attest?
          • If the Community Honor Code is approved by the Regents as a Regent's policy, then it applies to everyone whether they attest or not. Potentially, those who refuse could have thier assignments/tests refused as not meeting the institution standards (tentative).
          • Alternatively, given that this will be a Regent's policy, the attestation might be modified or eliminated. The intent of the attestation is to ensure that students are reminded of their responsibilities and community expectation. 
        • c) Is it an assignment by assignment attestation?
          • Attestation would happen on each "major" assigment or test, with any others up to the discretion of the instructor (tentative).

      Can a student be expected to attest when the TA (or grader or instructor) has not signed the Affirmation?

        • See the mandatory nature discussion above (tentative). 

       

       How is the Honor Code Affirmation going to be implemented? 
           a) Who keeps track of who has/has not affirmed?

           c) Mandatory or not, will there be a public black list (names of those who have not affirmed)?
           d) Mandatory or not, can one opt out later?
           e) Is it a once-in-a-lifetime affirmation?  Or yearly? Or semesterly? … 
           f) We are considering, based on community input, having an annual honor celebration where we sign a huge poster (like the class of poster at convocation) that goes up in the Fidel center. This eliminates record keeping, but instead celebrates our community and the advancment of our intent. This is based on the code being a Regent's policy, so the signing is our acknowledgement of our commitment, but is not required for the code to take affect or to be upheld.
