Google Apps FAQs

Q – Can we keep our existing email addresses?

A – No. All users will get a new email account with the following formats:

$1·         Faculty and Staff - FirstName.LastName@nmt.edu

$1·         Students - FirstName.LastName@student.nmt.edu

$1·         Club/Department Accounts – Club/DeptName@npe.nmt.edu

Old addresses will still work for receiving email.  Email sent to the old addresses will go directly to your new Google accounts.  No need to change business cards since the old address will still work, but future business cards should use your new Google address.

Q – My name is Michael and I go by Mike.  Can I use Mike instead of Michael for my email address?

A - Yes.  We will have a policy and procedure for requesting the use of a different name.

Q – Can I set up automatic forwarding from my New Mexico Tech email to another account?

A – You will not be allowed to set up automatic forwarding (forwarding all email to another account).  You can still forward email, just not every message automatically.

Q – Can I use other email clients via IMAP or POP?

A – Yes. However, if you do not use a web browser there are features that will not work.  Google recommends that you use IMAP if possible.

Even if they are zipped up they cannot be sent or received.

Q – What is my storage limit?

A – Storage space is unlimited for email and documents.

Q – How do I move my data to Google?
A – There are several ways to migrate your data over to Google.  Please consult this document, MigrationPaths.pdf, to find the best migration path for you.

Q – Will ITC provide assistance with the move and will I be charged?

A – ITC will provide any assistance needed with the migration.  Special cases and situations might incur a fee.

Q – When can I start moving my data to Google?
A – Google accounts will become active (accepting email) May 23rd.  At that time you can start the migration process.

Q – How do I get my new Google account?
A – Starting May 13th, 2016 you can log on to Banweb and set up your account.  If you do not have your password for Banweb, please see the Registrar in Fidel.

Q- How long do I have to move my data (email, contacts, calendar items, etc.) to Google?
A – You have one year from the migration start date to move all of your data.  After this the old account will be closed.

Q - Do I have to move my email from my old New Mexico Tech (@nmt or @admin) account?
A – No, but after one year the account will be closed.

Q – How long will the complete New Mexico Tech migration to Google take?
A – It all depends on the amount of data to move, how soon people start moving their data, and how much assistance ITC will need to provide to end users.  We anticipate several months and plan to allow up to one year (for those on sabbatical, extended leave, or just needing extra time).
