SOCORRO, N.M., June 27, 2008 – Tracy Peralta, manager of the New Mexico Tech Bookstore, recently won five awards at the Texas Book Company’s annual manager’s meeting in Dallas, Texas. The Texas Book Company operates the store in the Fidel Center per a contract with the university.
Peralta and the Tech store won for Most Improved Text Margin, Most Improved Gross Margin, Most Improved Net Profit of Percent of Sales, Outstanding Financial Management and Most Improved Store Manager for the 2007-08 school year.
The Tech bookstore total book sales increased 12.33 percent; net profit increased 8.55 percent, and the gross margin increased 9.1 percent. Roughly 48 percent of text book sales are used books.
Vice President for Student and University Relations Dr. Ricardo Maestas said he is impressed that Peralta nearly swept the annual awards.
“We are delighted that Tracy has won five out of the seven awards,” Maestas said. “This is a testament to the excellent staff of our bookstore.”
Peralta credits her staff for the bookstore’s improvements. She said her staff has worked closely with Tech faculty and staff to improve the store’s offerings.
“We talk to teachers and professors and work closely with them to purchase text books as early as possible,” Peralta said. “We try to buy back used books that are needed for the next year too.”
She said the store’s success can also be attributed to being responsive to the changing needs and desires of the customers. She said her job is made easier with complete support from the Texas Book Company and the university administrators.
“I’m very impressed with Tracy and the Texas Book Company,” Louise Chamberlin said. “They operate the store like it is their own, and they cater to the needs of Tech.”
The bookstore stocks a large variety of Tech-branded merchandise, school supplies, computer accessories and snack food. Its website is http://www.nmtechbookstore.com/
