SOCORRO, N.M., Aug. 21, 2008 The City of Socorro will begin a van service to Rio Communities and the RailRunner depot in Belen beginning Monday, August 25.
The van will leave Socorro from Sedillo Park at 6:15 a.m., stop in Rio Communities and then stop at the RailRunner station in Belen. The van will leave Belen after the 7:30 a.m. train arrives in Belen and stop at New Mexico Tech at about 8:15 a.m.
The afternoon trip will leave the parking lot of the Fidel Center at New Mexico Tech at 5:15 p.m., then arrive at the RailRunner station in Belen in time to catch the 6:30 p.m. train to Albuquerque.
The van will also make two other mid-day runs. The van will leave Socorro at 11 a.m. and at 2 p.m., with the only drop at the bus stop in Rio Communities. Deborah Dean of the City of Socorro said students attending UNM-Valencia can then take the Los Lunas bus to campus.
The cost is $1 per ride or $10 per week. Dean said riders who reserve space by the week will get priority over those who don’t.
Anyone interested in catching a ride should call the City of Socorro at 575.835.1501. To arrange transportation within the Belen-Rio Communities area, call 505.864.8630. To arrange transportation in the Los Lunas area, call 505.352.3595.
Three vans currently transport Tech faculty, staff and students between Socorro and parts north. Each of the three vans operate independently from the university.
The Socorro Los Lunas Van Express currently has openings. For more information about SoLLVE, e-mail Dr. Michelle Creech-Eakman at Tech.
