SOCORRO, N.M. September 11, 2012 – The 2012 Convocation ceremony was a rousing success, with hundreds of new students in attendance.
Fabian Vigil, 2008 graduate in mechanical engineering, gave the keynote address, encouraging students to get involved in campus activities and work hard. Vigil was the first Tech graduate to land a job with Honda Research and Development in Ohio. He obviously made a good impression with the company; five more Techies went to Ohio from the Class of 2012. And Honda is attending next week’s Career Fair for the first time.
The event opened with a short address from university president Dr. Daniel H. Lopez, who offered advice for new students. The event closed with balloons falling from the ceiling and a reception in the lobby of Macey Center.
The ceremony also included the introduction of the New Mexico Tech gonfalon, a banner that symbolizes the authority of the university faculty. Lopez ceremoniously presented the gonfalon to Faculty Senate President Dr. Brian Borchers. The banner will be used to lead the procession at future graduation ceremonies.
