SOCORRO, N.M. July 5, 2012 – Construction of the new dormitory will commence officially later this week. Pavilion Construction of Albuquerque, with headquarters in Portland, Ore., has begun fencing off its staging area and will close the road from Neal Street to the Swim Center no later than Monday, July 8.
An architect's rendering of the new dorm that is now under construction on campus at New Mexico Tech.
Miguel Hidalgo, Director of Special Projects, said Pavilion Construction has ample experience constructing similar buildings. The company was the low bidder for the project, outbidding 12 other companies.
The $6.7 million dormitory will be on the south side of the Athletic Field and will eliminate about 50 feet of the fields. However, the Athletic Field is still large enough to accommodate a regulation size rugby pitch and a regulation size soccer pitch.
The project to renovate the Athletic Field has been completed and the fencing will be removed when the UTEP football team arrives for its training camp in early August. That project included a new irrigation system, laser leveling and new sod.
The three-story dormitory, which has yet to be named, will include 150 beds, with study spaces on both wings of each floor and a multi-purpose room on the main floor. The former Child Care Center has been razed to make room for additional parking.
