SOCORRO, N.M., Oct. 14, 1999 -- New Mexico Tech's Materials Engineering Department made a strong showing at the recent Rio Grande Regional Symposium on Advanced Materials. A recent New Mexico Tech graduate captured first place in his category of the poster contest, two current Tech students won second and third place in the graduate student poster competition, and 11 other Tech students presented either papers or posters.
John Stuecker, who received his master's degree in materials engineering earlier this year from New Mexico Tech, won first place in the "technician" category of the poster competition. Stuecker now works at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque. He was the lead author on a poster entitled, "Merging Robocasting with Other Processes for the Development of Unique Materials." His advisor was Dr. Deidre Hirshfeld, associate professor of materials engineering at Tech.
Two graduate students in materials engineering captured second and third places in the graduate student poster competition. Second place went to Mary Sandstrom and third place to Charles Mandeville V. They are both students of Dr. Paul Fuierer, associate professor of materials engineering, who was a co-author on their posters.
Other New Mexico Tech students who presented papers or posters were: Magail Medina, F.A. Simsek, Bo Li, Guoping He, Ozgul Keles, Melissa Collins, Aaron Stump, Jenny Plakio, Sam Russell, Kelly Houston, and Chad S. Watson.
Other New Mexico Tech faculty members (in addition to Hirshfeld and Fuierer) who presented papers or posters at the symposium were: Dr. Osman Inal, professor; and associate professors Dr. Gillian Bond, Dr. Mansoor Alam, and Bhaskar Majumdar, all of the materials engineering department; and from Chemical Engineering, assistant professors Dr. Donald Weinkauf and Dr. H. S. Jeon.
This year's symposium, held on Oct. 11, 1999, in Albuquerque, was sponsored by the Albuquerque Chapter of AM International, the NM Section of the American Ceramic Society, and the NM Section of the Materials Research Society. The purpose of this annual symposium is to provide a forum for the local scientific and technical communities to exchange technical information on current research in materials science and engineering. This forum provides an environment in which collaboration and partnering opportunities between consultants, technology companies, universities, and the national labs can be explored as well as a venue for presentations by students from regional universities. Proceeds from this event are used by the sponsoring organizations to fund scholarships at regional colleges and universities.
