He was previously President of Barrick's South America region, a position he held since 2005.

Gonzales joined Barrick in 1998 and has more than 30 years of experience in the mining industry. He has played a key role in the successful growth of Barrick’s South American business unit and has also been integral to the development of the Pascua-Lama project. Under Gonzales’ leadership, the South America region consistently demonstrated strong performance in safety, production and cost management.

Gonzales earned his bachelor’s in chemical engineering from the University of San Antonio Abad in Cusco, Peru. He came to New Mexico Tech as a Fulbright Scholar and earned his master’s in Extractive Metallurgy in 1984.
