Dario Grana of Stanford University presents a special semianr in the Earth and Environmental Science Department. He will talk on "Bayesian Inversion Methods for Rock Properties Estimation from Seismic Data." 4 p.m. in MSEC 101

St. Patrick's Catholic Newman Center (Wed. 6 Feb, 2013 7:00 pm)

The Newman Center at New Mexico Tech is a Catholic organization which serves students seeking to grow in their faith. Meetings include fellowship, discussions, and dinner. All are welcome! 7 p.m. at the Newman Center on School of Mines Road.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers Meeting (Wed. 6 Feb, 2013 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm)

The New Mexico Tech student chapter of the ASME meets at 7 p.m. in Weir 102.  All are welcome to join in the food and fun.

Spring Career Fair (Thu. 7 Feb, 2013 9:00 am - 2:30 pm)

The Spring 2013 Career and Graduate School Fair is Thursday in the third floor ballrooms of the Fidel Center. All studeents are encouraged to attend and visit with recruiters. Earth Science Talk (Thu. 7 Feb, 2013 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm)

James McCalpin of GEO-HAZ Consulting is the Richard H. Jahns Distinguished Lecturer for the Geologic Society of America for 2012-2013. He will present an informal talk over lunch on "Ski Areas and Their Slope Stability Problems; The Colorado Story." Noon in MSEC 101.

Earth Science Seminar (Thu. 7 Feb, 2013 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm)

James McCalpin of GEO-HAZ Consulting is the Richard H. Jahns Distinguished Lecturer for the Geologic Society of America for 2012-2013. He will present his talk as the Earth and Environmental Science Department seminar. His talk is "Paleoseismology; Has it Reduced Seismic Hazards, And If Not, How Do We Change Course?" 4 p.m. in MSEC 101.

Swing Dance (Thu. 7 Feb, 2013 8:00 pm - 10:30 pm)

Weekly Swing Dance held in the SAC hosted by the New Mexico Tech Ballroom Dance Club. Everyone is welcome. Lessons are held before the dance most nights. 8 to 10:30 p.m.

NMT Auto Racing Club Meeting (Thu. 7 Feb, 2013 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm)

The Rockabilly Spring Swing Dance will be Thursday, February 7, in the third floor ballroom of the Fidel Center. This free event will feature live music by The Shadowmen. There will be awards for the best dressed, mocktails, free temporary tattoos, dancing and more fun. 8 p.m. to midnight.

Computer Science & Engineering student Sheng Lundquist presents "Locally Competitive and Neurally Inspired Algorithms for Sparse Representations in Video to Achieve Learning and Object Detections" at 11 a.m. in Cramer 221.

 

 

Chemistry Seminar (Fri. 8 Feb, 2013 12:00 pm - 1:15 pm)

The Chemistry Department seminar will be a screening of the movie, "The Age of Stupid." This ambitious documentary/drama/animation hybrid stars Pete Postlethwaite as an archivist in the devastated world of the future, asking the question: "Why didn't we stop climate change when we still had the chance?" He looks back on footage of real people around the world in the years leading up to 2015 before runaway climate change took place. Noon in Jones Hall 225 (conference room).
