Physics Dissertation Defense (Mon. 5 Nov, 2012 10:00 am - 11:00 am)

Luke Schmidt, doctoral candidate in physics, will defend his thesis, titled "Aperture Masking at Optical Wavelengths." Schmidt's dissertation describes the conception, design, construction and first light observations of AMASING (Aperture Masking And Speckle ImagiNG), a self contained optical aperture masking interferometer designed for the Magdalena Ridge Observatory 2.4m telescope. All are welcome at 10 a.m. Monday, November 5, in the CITL classroom in Speare Hall.

NMT Chemistry Symposium (Fri. 9 Nov, 2012 8:00 am - 8:00 pm)

The New Mexico Chemistry Symposium is an annual meeting of chemists at New Mexico Tech. The event includes talks by notable scientists around a theme. The Symposium is also a venue for undergraduate and graduate students in chemistry and related fields to present their research. For undergraduates interested in graduate school, the event provides a venue to learn about the graduate degree programs in Chemistry at New Mexico Tech and to discuss specific opportunities with our faculty. Breakfast starts at 7 a.m. Talks in the morning, followed by lunch, tours and a poster session in the afternoon. Awards banquet and keynote talk in the evening. All events (except tours) will be in the third floor ballrooms of the Fidel Center.

Verge Fund Speaker Series (Fri. 9 Nov, 2012 11:00 am - 12:00 pm)

Mark McCausland is the guest speaker for the Verge Fund Speaker Series, which is a partnership between New Mexico Tech and the Verge Fund. McCausland joined Ultramain as a partner in 1984 and later took over as president and CEO. The firm makes maintenance and logistics software to monitor and plan for the upkeep and repair of vehicles, facilities and assets and sells to maritime and ground transport operators, but its biggest customers are in the aviation industry. 11 a.m. in MSEC 105.

NRAO Colloquium (Fri. 9 Nov, 2012 11:00 am - 12:00 pm)

John Bally of the University of Colorado at Boulder is the guest speaker for the NRAO Colloquium. Bally will present “Stellar Feedback and the Ecology of the Galactic ISM.” He will discuss how large-scale surveys of the Milky Way complemented by high-resolution studies of small fields are revolutionizing the understanding of the Galactic Interstellar Medium (ISM) and star formation. He will describe the feedback ladder a chain of increasingly powerful mechanisms that may be responsible for the Galactic ecology. All NRAO employees are invited to attend via video. Hosted by Miller Goss. 11 a.m. in the Domenici Science Operation Center.

Presidents Dance (Fri. 9 Nov, 2012 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm)

The annual President's Dance will begin at 7 p.m. at Macey Center.

ACUI Billiards Local Qualifier (Sat. 10 Nov, 2012 6:00 pm - 11:00 pm)

The Billy Aards Club is organizing the local qualifying tournament for the national ACUI collegiate 9-ball tournament. Qualifiers will advance to the regional competition, with a chance to go to nationals. In the game room in the Fidel Center

Rocky Horror Picture Show (Sat. 10 Nov, 2012 11:00 pm - Sun. 11 Nov, 2012 3:00 am)

The Rocky Horror Picture Show will play at the SAC at 11 p.m.. Bring canned food to donate to the homeless shelter. Featuring returning "celebrity" emcee Billy Gaberina!
